Avalanche Safety Training Level 1 (AST-1)

Jan 9-10, 2010; 16 hrs of instruction

Offered in partnership with Canada West Mountain School.

This course is suitable for skiers and boarders looking for a solid foundation of Avalanche safety skills.  First field day, combined with a half-day of theory, is held at Mt. Seymour, second field day is held in Whistler to experience different conditions and snowpack.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 16 hours of instruction by CAA Professional or Active members
  • CAA approved curriculum for AST-1 course
  • Use of beacon, shovel and probe
  • CAA Industry-recognized Certificate of completion

OBJECTIVES:

During 2 days of the course you will cover:

  • terrain evaluation
  • mountain hazard assessment
  • safe route finding techniques
  • snowpack analysis
  • snow testing techniques
  • transceiver searches and rescue fundamentals

CLUB PRICE: $159

The price does not include the cost of Whistler backcountry ski pass ($42) and transportation costs from/to the course location.

Advanced Avalanche Safety Training (AST-2)

Jan 16-17 & Jan 23-24, 2010; 40 hrs of instruction

Offered in partnership with Canada West Mountain School.

An excellent 4-day program emphasizing hands-on development of skills and techniques to assist in decision making, route finding, terrain evaluation, snow profile interpretation and rescue techniques.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Certified AST Level 2 instructor.
  • CAA Industry-recognized Certificate issued upon completion.
  • Four field days held at a variety of locations to experience different snowpacks
  • This course is highly recommended to everyone who wants to gain confidence in making own decisions in the backcountry.

OBJECTIVES:

During the 4 days of the course you will learn to:

  • evaluate snow stability and hazard which includes collection of weather, snowpack and terrain information.
  • recognize safe terrain and routes in avalanche terrain, and know methods of avoiding hazardous regions.
  • understand snow avalanche mechanics, including: correlation of weather to snowpack, layering, effects of temperatures, principles of slab failure, leading causes of instabilities and forces involved in avalanches.
  • make observations of avalanche activity, wind loading, snow distribution and depth; snow testing; weather observations; and, terrain assessment.
  • perform a variety of shear tests, such as: pole test, compression test, burp, ski cutting, rutschblock; and, to know how to relate each test to the overall "picture".

CLUB PRICE:  The final price per person will depend on the group size (5 min - 8 max). Pricing is as follows: $495 + GST per person for a group of 5; $420 + GST for a group size of 8.

Introduction to Backcountry Skiing

Jan 30-31 & Feb 6-7, 2010; one evening session, 4 field days

A popular club program geared towards strong downhill skiers with previous summer or winter backcountry camping experience and/or experienced backcountry day skiers who want to gain experience on overnight winter trips.

The program’s objective is to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to safely participate in overnight backcountry ski trips. During the 2 weekends you will have an opportunity to learn about winter mountain travel, ski touring gear, terrain evaluation, basics of avalanche safety as well as to experience winter camping, enjoy some good turns and have fun!

The following topics will be covered:

  • Clothing and equipment
  • Trip planning
  • Winter camping
  • Route and snowpack evaluation
  • Avalanche safety
  • Transceiver use and self-rescue
  • Winter mountain travel
  • Weather evaluation.

This program does NOT cover glacier travel nor is it a substitute for an Avalanche Safety Training with a certified instructor.

COST: $250

The price does not include the transportation costs to/from the program location.

Advanced Ice Climbing

Jan 23-24, 2010; one weekend

Two-day program staying over night in Lillooet.

TOPICS COVERED:

  • Advanced ice climbing
  • Steep ice techniques
  • Leading techniques
  • Mock leads
  • Basic mixed climbing
  • Use of twin and half ropes.

Max group size 4 (Members Only)
Must have previous ice experience or have completed a course with me in the past.

COST: $105

The cost does not include accommodation ($99 + tax each based on twin share; Fri + Sat nights), meals and gas.

Ski-mountaineering Camp

Apr 10-18, 2010; Garibaldi Park

Winter ski mountaineering trip to the centre of Garibaldi Park.   A seldom visited but spectacular area with the opportunity to do ski ascents of many peaks such as Nivalis, Talon, Outlier, Peak 7600, Carcajou, as well as Mount Sir Richard (8900') from base camp.  Limited number of participants.  Members only.
