Trip Description

Don't have time for a long trip so thought I'd get a small amount of exercise in while practicing some ski mountaineering skills at a convenient location. The plan is to skin (snowshoers can come too) up to 2nd and/or 3rd bump where we can rope up, practice snow belay, use anchors crampons and ice axes/tools on some hard/compact snow and possibly ice. Exposure will be moderate but real, and participants should understand this.

This is not a course, and I'm certainly not teaching. You should know what you are doing but looking to hone/refresh those skills.

You should know what to bring and have the appropriate equipment and training if participating. We're not going that far, so go ahead and bring all you gear.

Carpooling welcome - use forum to arrange.

Timing: meet at trailhead at 9; get back to cars/parking lot around 3-ish (flexible)

Proposed Agenda:

  • Roping up. Partner check.
  • Shortening/extending the rope.
  • Snow pickets: carrying and placement
  • Climbing in rope teams of two
  • Belaying the leader, belaying the second
  • Climbing in rope teams of three or four. Passing an anchor.
  • Downclimbing. Traversing.
  • Rappelling: off a snow picket, off a snow bollard
  • Whatever else we want
