Trip Description

With so many people interested in the intro to backcountry ski course, I thought that an intro to avalanche companion rescue was in order! In this evening session we'll go over the essentials of using your beacon, probe and shovel to locate and dig out a buried victim.

We will meet at the Hollyburn Trailhead at 6pm and hike in about 10-15 minutes to find a suitable practice location.

What to bring

  • Snowshoes (depending on conditions, micro spikes might be sufficient, or you could bring touring skis or a splitboard)
  • Avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel (if possible, I will try to borrow a few spares just in case)
  • Warm layers
  • Headlamp
  • Snacks and water/tea/coffee
  • Whatever else you need to stay warm, dry and comfortable for the given weather conditions. Gaiters are recommended as we will be walking in the snow.

If you are totally new to avalanche companion rescue, I recommend that you take a half an hour or so to check out Avalanche Canada's online tutorial: https://www.avalanche.ca/tutorial/rescue
