Trip Description

A close-to-home trip and a worthwhile objective for those relatively new to mountaineering, or those who have climbed Sky Pilot and looked over to Ledge.  The club has some history on this peak, with members have completed both the first known ascent and the first winter ascent.

First Ascent: Don Munday, C. Field and F. Smith in 1912

First Winter Ascent: Glenn Woodsworth, A Shives. 1963

Club members also put up the other routes on Ledge: West Shoulder, North Face and the South Face.

We're doing the tourist route: Class 2-3, with some decent exposure.

These days, some fast folks do this route in a day from the Gondy (going up to the pink slabs on Skypilot, then down the east face of Skypilot to the basin and then wandering over to the start of the ledge route). However, that ain't me.  This trip will be an overnighter to Mountain Lake Hut, then past Sheer and onto the southeast corner of Ledge Saturday morning.  It's a climb up a longish  ledge that varies in width from 35 cm to several meters (with significant exposure), followed up with a short bush belayed climb to the top.

I'll grab keys to the gate, which will shorten the walk up.
