We will hike the Howe Sound Crest Trail (HSCT) over two days, from Cyrpess Bowl to Porteau Cove. We will aim for Magnesia Meadows as our camp spot. The objective is the completion of the HSCT--this is not a peak bagging trip.
There is a lot of information about the HSCT, and I encourage anyone interested in this trip to review the many trip reports available online to get a sense of what the hike will be like. In brief, the route is roughly 29km and stretches high above the Howe Sound along the spine of the Britannia Range.
Some things to consider: This is a strenuous hike, with the trail leading us continuously up and down--an overall elevation gain is reported online as approximately 1,900 meters, with an overall descent of 2,600 meters. Moreover, although there are lakes, creeks, and tarns along the route, water by August may be dried out or unsavory; and there will be some stretches were there will certainly be no water at all. So, we will need to bring plenty of water with us. Furthermore, as only wilderness camping is available on the HSCT, there are no amenities such as outhouses, tent pads, or bear caches so you will need to bring appropriate gear (e.g., a Bear canister or Ursack, trowel).
In order to make this trip work, a shuttle is necessary. Option 1: We arrange for someone (rideshare, family member, friend) to drop us off and pick us up. Option 2: we take two vehicles and leave one overnight at Porteau Cove and one overnight at the parking lot at Cypress Mountain. In either case we will equally share the cost of the rideshare or mileage (using BCMC's Recommended Guidelines for Compensation of Drivers).
We will finalize all details once the trip selection closes. Selection will be based on responses to the Questions for Participants and on prior, relevant BCMC trip participation. I'm simply looking for folks with the stamina and experience to hike the HSCT with a loaded pack (but not too heavy!) in two days.
