For the 3rd consecutive year I will lead a snow-based backcountry emergency management practice day. The goal of the session is to practice (not instruct) avalanche burial skills, casualty evacuation and possibly crevasse rescue for those inclined/equipped.
++DISCLAIMER++ This is not a a course, I am not an instructor. You should have at least AST 1 (or equivalent) training, a recent model (ideally digital) tranceiver, shovel and probe. We will be a group of peers reviewing and practicing already-learned skills. What I will also lead is practice in how to package an injured person and begin moving them out of the backcountry.
If there is interest, and you are appropriately equipped, we can setup crevasse rescue scenarios as well.
Depending on snow levels, we will ideally train on Mt Seymour, but may relocate or cancel if no suitable alternate is available. Travel method will be your choice. Hiking, snowshoeing or ski touring/split boarding depending on snow conditions are options. If (unlikley) deep snow conditions (ie >1ft), hiking will not be appropriate.
Requirements:
AST 1 (or equivalent) minimum
Tranceiver, shovel, probe
Knowledge of and experience in winter travel in mountain terrain
Proper clothing, equipment and safety supplies for a winter environment
Proper equipment and experience for snow travel
Rescue tarp or basic tarp and rope to practice packaging (we will only need 2 sets and I have one)
We will set up a group chat to plan closer-to the date.
Early arrival is a must, departure will be 0900 sharp.
