This will be a basic introduction/refresher into navigation using map and compass. Training split into half theory, half practice.
Theory Agenda: - Why this is an essential skill - Basic map reading (e.g. map scale, legend) and route finding (e.g. contours, slope, latitude/longitude) - Understanding declination - Basic compass use (e.g. setting declination, setting a bearing, using landmarks to determine a position) - Limitations of maps
Practice: We will use the surrounding environment to mimic mountain environment to practice the skills above.
Required gear list: - Compass - Pen and paper for notetaking
Possible other discussion points (time and group dynamic permitting): - Route planning and printing your own maps - Complex decision making (weather, terrain, time of year) - Pacing and estimating distance - Navigation in low visibility - Common Mistakes
Updates and any further details will be made via the BCMC website.
