Trip Description

It's the Camel!
Visible from downtown Vancouver, the Camel is a prominent feature adjacent to Crown Mountain. From the right angle, such as from the top of the Grouse Gondola, it easily looks like a Camel.  It's neat! There are several routes up it, the easiest being on the 'body' of the Camel. I would like to climb the Hind Leg Route, which is a wandering 5.6 trad rock route up the Camel's rump.

The approach to the Camel is moderately lengthy, though well established. At this very moment, I will propose going up the gondola to save some much needed energy for the approach. But, I'm open to doing the BCMC trail up if there is enough interest. Importantly, there is an exposed move down a chimney over a chockstone (which has a fixed line): there is a means to protect the participant, but this maneuver can be challenging to some. My advise is to check out the following trip report to be sure that you will be comfortable on this route: (https://stevensong.com/coastal-interior-bc/north-shore-mountains/the-camel/), (https://www.francisbaileyh.com/2023/07/29/the-camel/)

The size of the group can change based on the number of people who are comfortable and willing to lead a route up the Camel. At the moment, the number presumes that I will lead the 5.6 and bring up two participants. However, if you would like to lead something, I would be happy to advise on what I know about the Camel's other routes (5.2 - 5.9), and we can figure out rope teams as we go.

Participants are expected to bring their own rock climbing material (harness, personal anchor, helmet). A helmet is absolutely mandatory. Participants will also be expected to share in carrying group equipment, including ropes and a trad rack. Other details will be discussed in the trip forum.

The Camel was first climbed in 1903 by Frank Mills and company. It has been frequently climbed by the BCMC.
