ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HOSTED BY BCMC
The BCMC is hosting this year's FMCBC AGM over the weekend of May 27-29, 2016. We are looking for volunteers to help arrange and transport food/drinks for the Friday evening Meet and Greet, as well as for breakfast and lunch for the Saturday all-day meeting at UBC. For the M&G, if the weather is good we will meet at Locarno Beach. This should be similar to the BCMC's August BBQ's that have been held there in the past, often well run by Kevin. If the weather is bad we will meet at Brian Wood's house in UBC (we’ll make the call on Wednesday evening and notify attendees Thursday morning). Some FMC directors will have driven in from the Interior and will be tired and need feeding. I understand there is a BCMC budget item for this. For the M&G the BCMC will provide a potluck evening meal, plus snacks and drinks. Brian will provide a table, a BBQ stove and twin burner Coleman Stove for cooking, a pot of chilli but we will also need bread rolls, burgers, hot dogs, salads, fresh and perhaps cooked vegetables, and drinks such as coffee, tea, pop etc. If the event is held at Locarno, it will necessarily be a liquor-free event. If you have useful picnic stuff, e.g. tables, chairs, BBQ stove, cooking stuff, cups, plates, KFS, etc., please bring them to help folks relax and enjoy themselves and to reduce use of disposables.
For Saturday breakfast we need volunteers to buy from the local stores trays of snacks, fruit and muffins to deliver to UBC before 9:00 a.m. (There is a Save-on-Foods on campus that can be ordered from with 48 hours notice, as well as an IGA near 4th and Alma). Coffee and tea will be needed somehow, but there is a kitchen and servery adjacent the meeting room which will be the AMS OLD SUB Party Room. For lunch we need volunteers to make or buy sandwiches, cut up fruit and vegetables, cakes, muffins etc. for delivery to UBC by noon. Also, we are still short of billets for ... Read more

FMCBC - Call for Volunteers

https://bcmc.ca/m/news/view/FMCBC-Call-for-Volunteers

https://bcmc.ca/m/news/view/FMCBC-Call-for-Volunteers

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP HOST THE AGM OF THE FMCBC

The BCMC will host the Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) on the weekend of 28/29 May 2016. Ben Singleton-Polster and Brian Wood (BCMC’s co-directors of the FMCBC) are looking for the following help:

1. 3 or 4 volunteers to help plan and / or organise this event.

Tasks:

- Arrange breakfast and lunch for Saturday meeting
- Organize billets.
- Event Organization/Coordination

2. Billets for about 20 directors for the nights of Friday and Saturday (27/28 May) of various member clubs from around the province. The main events of the AGM will take place on the west side of Vancouver, so billets located in the City of Vancouver are preferable. The FMCBC pays for and provides a light breakfast and lunch for directors attending the AGM on Saturday, however, it is usual for the billet hosts to provide breakfasts for their guests on Sunday morning.

3. Activities for our guests:
Local Entertainment for Saturday after 4:00 PM
      1) About 6.00 pm. Restaurant meal (covered by attendees)
      2) About 8.00 pm. Lecture, slide presentation, etc. (presenters and suitable location needed for the latter two)

Outdoor Activities (i.e. Hikes, nature walks of various lengths)
            - Saturday-Hikes of various levels and lengths (for weekend attendees not participating in the AGM)
            - Saturday- Post meeting walk (close to AGM venue) from about 4:00pm-5:30pm
            - Sunday - Hikes of various levels from 8/9:00 am – 12:00pm
**Our deadline for finalizing these arrangements is 1 March 2016**
Meet and Greet
An informal “Meet and Greet” (M&G) is planned for Friday evening near UBC to provide an opportunity to socialize and for attendees to meet their billet hosts. The M&G is a BYOB event with a casual evening meal provided at our club’s expense (as simple or a... Read more

Summer Call for Trips and Instructors

https://bcmc.ca/m/news/view/Summer-Call-for-Trips-and-Instructors

https://bcmc.ca/m/news/view/Summer-Call-for-Trips-and-Instructors

Every BCMC member now has the ability to post trips for the official Trip List, which can be done here if you're logged in. If there's a trip you wish was on the schedule but isn't, help the club out by posting it and help fulfill the high demand for club trips. By posting trips for the coming months, it helps you commit to the trips you want to do as well as helps other members have a chance to plan to sign up as well.
Take a look at the past trip list for ideas and destinations, other resources for ideas include Bivouac and clubtread.com for trip reports.
If each member who participates in club trips posts at least one trip a year, we'll never have a shortage of trips for our eager new members. :)
Another role we're actively looking for is volunteer instructors for summer courses, we've got an eager coordinator, Carson, who's looking to organize lots of clinics and courses this summer if he has enough experienced volunteer instructors to help out: climbing, navigation, mountaineering, basic trip organization, mentorship, and more. If you're interested in helping out, please contact Carson at bcmc.courses@gmail.com.
With your help, this will be the best year yet for the BCMC!

“BCMC 800” - We're at 800 members!

https://bcmc.ca/m/news/view/-BCMC-800-We-re-at-800-members

https://bcmc.ca/m/news/view/-BCMC-800-We-re-at-800-members

“BCMC 800” was achieved on Feb.15 – yup, we are 800 now.
Our PR Volunteers Astrid St.Pierre, Bala Kumar, Rob Szpak, Michelle Hyun, Dave Robertson and Francis signed up 14 new members at our PR table at the VIMFF – North Vancouver.
Their successful work pushed our ‘active membership accounts’ over the 800 barrier during the VIMFF on Feb.15th
‘Thank You Very Much’ for helping make the BCMC one of the leading Mountaineering Clubs in BC and in Canada.
Next steps: We need more trip organizers who organize more trips for all those new members!

The BCMC is a member driven club that has been run by volunteers from it's membership since it's creation in 1907, then known as the Vancouver Mountaineering Club. 106 years of member involvement has made what the British Columbia Mountaineering Club is today.

There are no paid positions with the BCMC, it is managed by an elected board of volunteer executive members who deal with the day to day affairs of the club. The executive members themselves cannot accomplish all needed tasks and rely on the assistance of volunteers from the ranks of the club to help with both ongoing and periodic club roles.

Currently there are three vacant executive seats which are leaving important roles that need attention to keep the club running. Additionally the vacant positions increase the burden on the existing executivemembers who have stepped forward to help the club in their specific roles.

All fourteen of the executive positions also need ongoing regular support from the membership with administrative type duties throughout the year. These positions can either be ongoing tasks requiring an hour or two per week or periodic helping out with short term roles.

In order to further facilitate the involvement of club members the executive has initiated a new process to help fill these vacant roles. There will be a regular section in the newsletter identifying current or upcoming areas that the club needs help with. A new section has been added to the forums under BCMC Member Forums called Club Volunteer Help.
