Camping & Climbing at Frenchman Coulee (Vantage), WA – Long Weekend
Frenchman Coulee offers a great mix of sport and trad climbing on unique columnar basalt in a scenic setting. There’s a rustic campground (pit toilets, no running water or amenities) just a few minutes’ walk from the crag - if this is where we choose to stay.
I’ll likely be climbing sport in the 5.10–5.11- range and might be bringing a trad rack for easier routes. The area has excellent variety for all levels. This
PDF gives a basic overview.
There’s much more beyond that -
Mountain Project is the best resource (pro tip: download the Washington routes in the app for offline use).
Weather & Conditions:
Forecast looks great, as is typical this time of year. Bring sunscreen, expect cooler temps overnight, and be prepared for wind at the campground.
Logistics:
Plan is to leave Vancouver after work Friday, May 15 (~4:30 PM, flexible), cross at Peace Arch or Truck Crossing, stop for groceries, then head to camp. Climb all day Saturday and Sunday, and return Monday, May 18. I’m open to a short Monday morning session before leaving.
I can take up to 3 others in my vehicle and plan to stay at the campground all weekend. If you prefer to arrive later or leave earlier, that’s totally fine.
Border Notes:
This is a U.S. trip, bring proper documentation and avoid restricted items (especially fruit/veg, which are commonly flagged). We’ll stop for groceries after crossing.
Important:
I am not a guide. Participants should have sufficient outdoor climbing experience and be able to communicate their skills and comfort levels clearly. Spots will be based on experience, trip fit, and group dynamics and not first come, first served.
