+1 for a used vehicle of a mainstream brand, as long as it's reasonably reliable. Cheap to fix, and you can change the engine and transmission annually for what you save in insurance and depreciation....
Somebody has to recommend Subaru, so I might as well do it. They have better 4wd systems and are better on rough roads than many more rugged-looking vehicles. They are also pretty good on paved roads...
