BCMC Trip co-led by Miranda Alldritt and Spencer Pooghkay. Nine intrepid explorers made the mighty march to Mamquam Mountain in the teeth of a sudden heat wave. The trip planned for an overnight stay at Darling Lake, so packs were heavy with camping supplies. We made our casual way across the log crossing and up the mountainside. The snow began just shy of Darling Lake, and made for some precarious postholing. But, water was in plenty, and we spent the bulk of the afternoon sharing tales of other adventures. At 3:40(ish) in the morning the next day (~10C), we headed out on the breakable crust snow up to Mamquam Icefield. Snowshoes were considered but stayed behind at camp. The success of a couple of trail runners gave us confidence that the route would be forgiving. We roped up at the toe (ish) of the glacier, and sauntered to the mountain proper. There was no evidence of crevasses, and the icefields were as flat as a board. The bergshrund was just visible in the distance, but a well travelled trail avoided this without any complications. The final rocky step to the summit was steep and spicy, but we all mixed climbed through the jugs and cracks without any issue. We summited by about 9AM, as the day was starting to really warm up. Through increasingly softening snow, we scurried back down to camp. Postholing was fairly minimal, perhaps only shin deep mush to slow us down. We were quick to break down camp and get out of the UV furnace, and returned to the parking lot and civilization by 6PM. Many thanks to the trip leaders for a well executed mountaineering trip, and to the participants (Gloria, Nina, Bernard, Suhrud, Shane, Ian) for great support and friendship. Pictures provided below by all participants.
