Please give a basic overview of your climbing background, such as: are you more of a rock climber, scrambler, mountaineer or just getting into the activity; and do you usually build anchors on bolts, gear, or using natural features?

What application are you looking to apply these skills towards, for example: rock/ice climbing rescue, assisting a second, glacier crevasse rescue? We will try to discuss those application-specific variations mentioned.

Participant Information

Course Objectives:  this is a 1-day course covering simple 3:1 and complex 5:1 haul systems for rescuing climbing partners.  Sounds simple (no pun intended) but we'll need a busy day to cover the material, including demonstrations and practising.  If you're a "visual person" then the example below may help... it's from RopeRescueTraining.com

Meeting Place:  we'll meet 7:30am at Tim Hortons (Hwy#7 & Coast Meridian Rd).  Then drive to the Dennett Bluff parking area, near beginning of Dennett Lake Trail (North Shore), arriving at 8:00am.

Group Size:  the maximum number of participants has been set to *12* but may increase if another "co-organizer" joins the course.  The minimum number required for the course to proceed will be *8*, i.e. 2 teaching and 6 learning.

Minimum Gear:

  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Suitable clothing for the weather (potentially all day in the rain)
  • Webbing (full strength),  min 6m
  • Cord  (7 or 8mm), min 6m
  • Non-lock biners, min 6
  • locking biners, min 4, more recommended
  • 1 pulley (2 recommended)
  • 3 prussics suitable for the rope you have
  • 1 Rope (>30M length, 7 – 11mm diameter)
  • Belay/Rappel device + belay carabiner

Prerequisites:
Please review information in the course Planning Forum discussing techniques for building 3:1 and 5:1 rescue haul systems.  While doing this, create your own set of "How-To" notes and, in your home or local park, build both a 3:1 and a 5:1 pulley system -- as best you can.  Afterword send the organizer a "confirmation" email detailing what gear was used and whether the pulleys worked as expected.  Please have this "homework" completed at least 3 days **BEFORE** the course begins.  It's so important that *everyone* attempts to build both a 3:1 and 5:1 pulley system **BEFORE** the course begins that if we, the organizers, don't receive your "confirmation email" as requested then your course registration may be cancelled and your fee refunded.  Also note that, during the course field day, each participant will be asked to demonstrate how to construct either a 3:1 or 5:1 rescue haul system.  Some advanced knowledge of both haul systems will make your field day more focused and productive.

Course Fee:
  $20 CAD.
Please note that the course organizers are volunteers. Your course fee is paid directly to the BCMC.  If the organizers cancel the course then anyone that has paid the course fee will receive a full refund.

Registration process:
1) after you've register online your name will automatically be added to the "Request List" while the organizer reviews your registration information,
2) after the organizer approves your request, your name will be placed in the "Waiting List", which will give you access to the "Pay Now" (PayPal) button to pay online,
3) after payment has been confirmed by PayPal, your name will be moved to the "Confirmed List" and a confirmation email will be sent to you. 
Notes about the "Confirmed List":
 1) ordering will be based on when course fee payments were received.
 2) group total, including organizers, is limited by "Max participants:".

Payment options:
1) online PayPal / Credit Card payment through the BCMC website is preferred,
2) the alternate method is send a cheque payable to the B.C. Mountaineering Club and mailed to PO Box 2674, Vancouver, BC V6B 3W8.  Allow time for delivery since payment will not be considered "received" until the cheque has been deposited into the BCMC bank account.  Contact the organizer to request a space on the "Confirmed List" be held for you.
NOTE: cancellation fees may apply if a "Confirmed" participant withdraws from the course and requests a refund.  For more information, please review the BCMC Course Refund Policy.

Cancellation:  the organizers will check the weather forecast the evening before and cancel the course if there is a weather forecast for 'heavy' rain and wind, i.e. a "Storm Warning".  If the organizers decide to cancel the course then full refunds will be issued by the BCMC as soon as possible.  Also note, if the organizer(s) decides to remove a participant that has already paid, possibly for not preparing as requested, then a full refund will be provided by the BCMC.

Emergency Info:  please make sure your Emergency Contact info has been added to your web-account profile.  You can do this by logging into the bcmc.ca website, then click on: My Account > Edit Profile Information > Private Info and add your Emergency Name and Phone Number info.  Please re-enter your current password to complete the process.  Your emergency contact info is stored *privately* and only made available to those organizing events that *you* choose to attend.

Medical issues:  if there are any current medical issues that should be shared with the course organizers, please send one/both of us an email message and/or phone the primary organizer ASAP.  For example, if you are very allergic to bee/wasp bites, or you are taking medication that could be vital information to First Aid Responders.  Anything you choose to share with us will remain private.
