Participant Information

Let's try skiing on the Western flank of MacLeod Peak. We'll access it using the 8 Mile Creek FSR, which is just 8 miles East of Hope. There has been logging in this area in the past few years and the road is reportedly in good condition. A report from September on bivouac.com says, "The Eight mile Creek FSR is in good 2wd condition. The road goes up the valley about 5.5km before it crosses eleven mile creek to the north side and turns back down the valley There is a branch road on the right just before 4.5km which goes uphill to about 1215m. This branch road required some clearance for waterbars and was really steep at the start." We'll drive up as far as we can, then skin to the top of the road. After that, we'll continue up through gently sloped forest and meadow. Starting at around 1700m, the slope steepens and becomes a narrow ridge. Depending on conditions and how we feel, we can either stick to the gentle meadows or continue up toward the Western peak of MacLeod (but I doubt we'll be able to reach the peak on skis).

Here's a rough map of the route assuming that we park at the branch at 840m elevation, and stop at 1700m,

Gear required: Avalanche gear (Transceiver, Probe, Shovel), AT, tele, or splitboard equipment, Headlamp suitable for skiing.

Welcome additional gear: GPS, PLB, camera, first aid kit.

Recommended carpooling cost:  approx. $20 per passenger; please arrange with driver; bring funds.

I have not been to this area before, nor have I heard of anyone else skiing here. It looks like it'll be good on maps and google earth, but it might suck. I think the slopes will be pretty low angle, so this should be an okay trip for beginners.
