Participant Information

 This course is taught by Mountain Skills Academy & Adventures by a professional ACMG certified guide. MSAA is offering a special price for BCMC members of $276.25 + GST (regular price for non-members: $325 + GST).

Course Details:

Our certified guides will teach you all the critical crevasse rescue and glacier travel safety skills. As well as the essential techniques for rescuing both roped and un-roped victims from a crevasse. MSAA has developed a carefully crafted, cutting-edge curriculum, delivered by highly qualified guides who use a lesson plan. This ensures all participants acquire the full intended curriculum, demonstrate the skill to standard and are set up for rapid future progression. All participants receive a valuable course handout essential for future skill practice and refinement. This course provides the necessary skills to not only undertake crevasse rescue and glacier travel but also how to deal with glacier travel cruxes such as when to rope up, how to assess, cross and belay, or rappel, over crevasse snow bridges and bergschrunds. Learn how to navigate complex crevasse fields in this field-based course.

 

Itinerary:

Day 1: Meet at 8:15am at the Escape Route Alpine Demo Centre. The guide will have everyone sign a waiver and give a brief safety briefing along with discussing the day's objectives. This day will take place in the valley, and the guide will take you to an appropriate location to practice rope ascension.

The day will end at approximately 4:30pm with a short debrief of the day

Day 2: Meet at 8:15am at the Escape Route Alpine Demo Centre. The guide will start a discussion on the previous day, current conditions and glacier morphology. The group will then head to a local glacier, or a dry land alternative, for the rest of the day.

 

The day will end at approximately 4:30pm with a course debrief and discussion of next steps for the students.

 

Gear List:

 

Individual Equipment

  • Rock climbing shoes
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Belay device
  • 6 locking carabiners
  • 120cm or 240cm sling
  • Chalk bag

 

We recommend getting familiar with your own gear but we are happy to provide the gear if you let us know what you need. Individual Equipment

 

Plan ahead, check the weather forecast, and dress accordingly.

  • Backpack (25-35 litres)
  • Rite in the Rain notebook and mechanical pencil
  • First Aid Kit with blister kit
  • Map, compass, GPS (all optional)
  • Crevasse Rescue Kit
  • Harness
  • 1 Ratchet (Petzl Micro-Traction and or Auto-block device (Petzl Reverso or Black Diamond ATC Guide)
  • 4 locking carabiners (2 of these should be pear shaped, Munter/HMS locking carabiners)
  • 4 non-locking carabiners
  • 1 x 120cm sling
  • 2 x 5m 7mm prussik
  • 1 x 1.5m 7mm prussik, hollow block or T-Block
  • Ice Screw (optional for day 2)
  • Ice Axe (for day 2)

We have Crevasse Rescue Kits available to rent if needed, but we recommend using your own so you can get comfortable with your gear under the guide’s instruction.

 

 

 

Curriculum:

 

Day 1 - Dry Land Rescue Systems:

  • Introduction to summer Glacier Kit
  • Load transfer, Ascending and Rappelling Systems
  • Dividing and Tying into the rope
  • Canadian Drop Loop Rescue technique
  • Practice and skill refinement
  • Problem Solving: insufficient rope, middle person in crevasse, etc.

Day 2 - Glacier Travel and Rescue Scenario’s:

 

  • Glacier Morphology Session and Glacier Travel Considerations
  • Roping Up for Glacier Travel
  • Rope Travel Exercise
  • Team Rescue Exercise
  • Practice and skill refinement

(2) Once on the Waiting List you will have access to the Course Online Payment on the left side of the page where you will find the promo code. Complete your payment directly with MSAA HERE  using the promo code. Be sure to select the right date in the drop down menu. You will receive a confirmation email from MSAA once your payment is completed.

(3) Forward your confirmation email to courses@bcmc.ca. You will then be added to the Confirmed List.
