It's claimed to be an exciting backpacking trip through some of the loneliest and most rugged backcountry in eastern Washington, ideal for early season conditions. Traverse a deep, narrow canyon flanked by towering granite walls and emerge onto its lofty rim. Then mosey through groves of steely old-growth ponderosa pines and amble across golden hillsides awash with wildflowers. Bear, moose, wolves, and cougars prowl this wild corridor, which is seldom traipsed by human visitors. FYI, the area is known for rattlesnakes & ticks.
The trail is 26km with total elevation gain 800m split into 3 hiking days. In addition to the through trail we will also consider side trips to nearby peaks: Cougar, 13 Mile, Fire & 17 Mile Mountains none of which are significant but a peak bag nonetheless.
On Thursday evening, we will depart heading straight for Republic, WA and camp in the area. It will be a late arrival, likely setting up in dark. Friday morning we rise early and get shuttling started, have a quick grocery stop and start hiking by 10am. First campsite is at km 11, with 2 peaks enroute. If we decide to hike them, will likely add a few hours to the day. Saturday is 10-11 km including 2 easier side trips. Last day is 5.5km downhill back to car. Before the 5+ hour drive home we have to fetch the vehicle at TH. Anticipate being home past dinner time. Water Sources are scarce and not reliable in late season. I would plan to be extra cautious. Pre-hydrate thoroughly pre-trip plus carry enough for first 2 days. Dress appropriately for ticks and snakes.
We will have 2 cars as is needed for shuttling. Transportation is the primary cost, there will be roughly 1200kms total driving round trip with shuttling.
