Been looking to do this for a while but trail access can be a challenge and is best done with a small group to make the transport cost-effective. This 4-day hike will start at Fiddlehead Landing and end in Lang Bay (51 km), with an overnight stop on Tin Hat Mountain being the highlight. The trip will only go ahead if the weather forecast is favorable to get the epic views Tin Hat is known for.
Preliminary plans are as follows:
Day 0 – Thursday afternoon/evening: Take the Horseshoe Bay – Langdale ferry. Overnight in the Gibsons/Sechelt area (either in a hostel or camp – I have a friend in Gibsons who might be able to let us camp on her property)
Day 1: Take the ferry to Powell River. Park at Lang Bay. Use a private shuttle service to access Fiddlehead Landing. Start trail. Camp by Tin Hat Hut. Note there is no water source at Tin Hat and will require carrying all of your water for the day with you.
Day 2: Camp by Elk Lake Hut
Day 3: Camp by Walt Hill Hut
Day 4 - Monday: Hike out to Lang Bay. Drive back to Vancouver
With four people in one vehicle, the shared ferry/trailhead shuttle costs are expected to be roughly $140 per person, plus the usual vehicle fuel costs.
I am aiming to do this trip June 5-9. However, depending on weather/ferry availability/participant’s schedules, it may shift up or down by a day, or be moved to a different weekend. Preference will be given to those who have some flexibility in their schedules and who can actively participate in planning the logistics of the trip together.
Note that water availability can be an issue in the summer and we will need to plan accordingly. I’m hoping this shouldn’t be a problem in early June. Also there are huts along the trail on a first-come first-serve basis, but plan on bringing a tent.
