We will fly into the Pebble Creek Hut from Pemberton and drop food off at the North Creek Hut. At the Pebble Hut, we will have a chance to climb Pebble Peak, Mt. FASP, and, on a big day, Mt. Thiassi. We will also spend a day doing some maintenance near the hut. Then we will head over to the North Creek Hut where we can climb Sessel or Sugas, and will spend a day doing some trail work. The flight cost is $250 (less than half the usual cost) and there are no cabin fees. Both huts have stoves, mattresses, and a warm place to sleep. No tents or cooking equipment need to be carried as they are already at the huts. On the trip out you will be expected to carry some extra weight so that those using chainsaws and brush cutters to clear the trail can do so without having to shoulder a big pack too.
Glacier travel, some scrambling and bush-wacking will be required. There are only few rough trails out of the huts to the alpine, and it is glaciated terrain. You must be able to navigate steep side hills, recently deglaciated terrain, boulder fields and walk on glaciers. Although the glaciers are not very steep, crampons, an ice axe, harnesses and crevasse rescue gear are required, along with the knowledge of how to use it. We will review basic self-arrest skills and roped glacier travel. You should be reasonably fit. (able to do the Grind 85 minutes or less) and have done some backpacking in the Coast Mountains. We will cook as a group with each participant doing one breakfast and one dinner. The Pebble Hut has a four-burner propane stove with an oven and the North Creek Hut has a two-burner, countertop stove. We will spend four nights at the Pebble hut, then hike over to the North Creek hut and spend two nights there.
