Trip Planning Questions

Tell me about your outdoor climbing experience (are you comfortable lead belaying/climbing outside? can you set/clean SERENE anchors?)

What you are hoping to climb this weekend (sport or trad, will you be leading or hoping to top rope, any particular grades, climbs or crags you have your eye on? etc)

What group gear are you able to bring?

Do you prefer to drive or be a passenger? If drive, how many passengers can you take?

Anything about the plan I've proposed (timing, etc) that you will be changing up?

Participant Information

Camping and climbing at Frenchman Coulee (Vantage), Washington for the long weekend!

Frenchman Coulee has a great variety of sport and trad climbing on very cool basalt. Rustic campground (pit toilets, but no running water or other amenities) a few minutes walk from the nearest crag. I will likely be climbing sport in the 5.10 range, and will bring my trad rack to play around on easy (<5.9) trad, but crags there have loads of variety for every level of climber. This PDF has an overview of select climbs & helps get your bearings, but there is FAR more than what is included here https://wenatcheeoutdoors.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/VantageGuide-AllEdited-515.pdf  Mountain Project is wonderful for this area, and what I generally use while down there (pro tip: if you download the app and the "Washington" routes you can use it offline/in airplane mode while there!)

The weather forecast looks great for the area (much better than Squamish), as it often is this time of year. Remember your sunscreen but expect the temps to drop overnight. The camping area often gets quite windy.

Packing List: climbing gear (helmet is highly recommended for this area!), camping gear including something to sit on, enough water for the trip, food* (see below). Group gear will be addressed in a WhatsApp chat for confirmed participants.

My plan is to leave very early Friday, April 18, cross the border at Peace Arch or Truckers crossing, stop for groceries, set up camp, and climb at The Feathers (the closest crag to the campground) Friday afternoon. Climb all day Saturday & Sunday, climb Monday morning before driving back to Vancouver. I can take 2-3 others in my vehicle. I will be sleeping in my vehicle and don't plan to leave the campground until the end of the weekend. If you'd like to meet us there later or leave early that is fine too.

*This trip is in the States, so make sure you have all of the documentation required to get across the border smoothly and no contraband (they have been huge on no fruit & veg at border crossings). We will stop once we cross the border to grab whatever groceries we need for the weekend before heading to the camping area.

I am not a guide and expect that all participants have sufficient outdoor climbing experience and communicate their skills and anything they are uncomfortable with in an effective manner. Participants will be accepted based on answers to trip planning questions/fit with the group dynamic (not necessarily first come/first accepted). Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns before signing up.
