Participant Information

Let's use a lesser-known 13-14km hike to test our packing, stamina, and getting to know each other before tackling more challenging or harder objectives. This is an opportunity for the mentee group to use an local hike to practice packing for a more challenging day hike, planning for the weather, and using some of the items in our kit. It is a lesser-travelled trail that requires ferry coordination. There are no stores or restaurants to count on being open or available on the island - bring all your food and water for the day.

Each mentee will be expected to be entirely self-sufficient, including with navigation. Please download maps and prepare to be familiarized with the route in advance. Do not expect the mentor to "guide" the hike, rather to facilitate group decision making.

The intention is to complete the out-and-back with time for lunch and snacks at the top. The hike will likely be done by about 3-4pm, but depending on the finish time, the ferry timing could be a factor.

Here is the trail on AllTrails: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/mount-killam

Bring your 10 essentials, leave a trip plan. https://www.adventuresmart.ca

We will confirm again prior to the hike, but we will plan for the following:

6:45am - Meet outside the Horseshoe Bay ticket office to prepare to catch the 7:30am ferry to Gibsons, and the connecting 8:20 ferry to New Brighton. You will need to purchase tickets.

The last three ferries off New Brighton are 4:30, 5:25pm and 6:30. Everyone should know how their average speed to hike 13km and 850m elevation by this point so we can leave an accurate trip plan.

Deadline to sign up: May 30th. At least two mentees need to register for this hike to go ahead.
