Let's explore Fairview Bay, Rainy Day Lake and enjoy the beautiful views and some swimming!
This trip will consist of a 6km hike in that can be quite challenging, to arrive at the Fairview Bay Hut. There are outhouses, bear cache and a water source, but later in the season it can get crowded, and if it is, we may need to continue to Rainy Day Lake. This time of the year, it will be somewhat busy and likely to see other campers. We can choose to camp at Fairview Bay (it's beautiful), or press onward to Rainy Day Lake (3km further), where it will be less busy, but has a private lake view, and saves some effort on the way home. In the multiple times I have done this hike, I have almost always encountered seals and starfish swimming in the ocean at Fairview Bay with me.
Rainy Day Lake is great for swimming and relaxing, and then we can do a short ascent, followed by a long descend out and back to the ferry (7km from Rainy Day Lake back to the ferry).
Travel considerations:
- This trip can be done without a car by taking the Horseshoe Bay Ferry to Langdale, then using either the Sunshine Coast Shuttle OR sharing a ride from Coastal Rides. Its about $50 each way via the shuttle. Sunshine Coast Taxi usually charges $75 for the whole car. Then we take the ferry from Earl's Cove to Saltery Bay. The hike starts right outside from the ferry terminal. I have never personally taken a car, and I have no idea how challenging it is with ferry reservations etc.
- This is not an "easy to turn back" option because of the ferry travel. There are no shopping facilities at the ferry station, so you will need to make sure you have everything with you.
- Cell phone reception is varied, but mostly available (sometimes just one bar).
