Participant Information

Mount Albert is a glaciated 2,552-meter summit overlooking Princess Luisa Inlet on the Sunshine Coast.  Despite a dearth of reports online, its frequently climbed during the Summer by parties from the Malibu Club based in PLI.  Trails from the shoreline to the peak are shown on Caltopo and are visible using Google Earth.

The proposed itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 - Drive to Egmont, board water taxi and transport to MacDonald Island Park/campground in PLI.  Camp there that night or possibly begin hike up into the alpine below Albert.

Day 2 – Hike up to basecamp below glacier

Day 3 – Climb Albert, return to camp, pack up and return to MacDonald Island Park.

Day 4 - Water taxi pick up and return to Egmont

The itinerary could be compressed to just 3 days but note the dependency on the water taxi.

Although the final bit of the climb involves glacier travel, it appears that most of it can be bypassed by taking to the rock ridge that cradles it on the east and north sides.  This does add a little extra distance, so if the group prefers to stick to the glacier, rope and gear may be necessary.  That said, the glacier is relatively low-angle and come August most crevasses should be easily visible.

Getting to Egmont requires taking the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and driving most of the way towards Earls Cove.

The water taxi ride is 3 hours each way and costs $855 each way.  The more that sign up, obviously the lower the cost per person.  Water taxi needs to be booked in advance with down payment – I will collect funds from each participant should there be sufficient interest in this trip.
