Canyoning Practice Session (9am to 12pm, August 16, 2025)
Image of the trip's second rappel
For this short trip we will head into a canyon (near Squamish) for some rappel drills (i.e., descending, ascending, passing a knot). We will not progress through the canyon, but rather utilize a section with two rappels that both exit into deep pools of water--the first rappel is 6 meters in height and the other is 10 meters. After the second rappel we will scramble back up to the first rappel station. As both rappels exit into cold, deep pools of water, a wetsuit is necessary (as is ability to swim the meter or two to exit the pool).
The following gear is required:
- Climbing or canyon harness
- Helmet
- Whistle
- 1-3 locking carabiners (all carabiners need to be locking)
- Adjustable Friction Descender (rappel device) – Figure 8 style only
- Lanyard / cow tail
- Wetsuit
- Grippy shoes that you don’t mind getting soaked
Gear needed for ascending and knot passing (not required if you just plan on rappelling)
- Foot loop (cord sling or webbing)
- VT prusik
- Ascender (mechanical ascender or friction hitch)
I will have a rope, but as I would like to set up two rappel stations, a second rope (static) would be nice to bring.
We will do a gear check prior to heading to the canyon and anyone without all the required gear will not be invited to continue with the trip.
Further details will be provided to selected trip participants.
