Participant Information

This is a relaxed early-winter overnight trip to Elfin Lakes, with the goal of spending one night at the Elfin Lakes Hut (space permitting) or camping nearby, and getting in a few short laps on Round Mountain on December 30 or the morning of December 31, depending on conditions and group energy.

Both skiers and snowshoers are welcome. The emphasis is on enjoying winter travel, camping or hut life, and low-key turns rather than high mileage or big objectives.

Note: This trip will only go through if we can get enough people to drive up to the Upper Red Heather Parking Lot.

Plan (Tentative)

December 30
  • Early departure from Vancouver
  • Approach from Red Heather Upper Parking Lot
  • Short ski laps or snowshoe exploration around Round Mountain (conditions permitting)
  • Travel to Elfin Lakes
  • Set up camp or settle into the hut
December 31
  • Optional morning lap or short tour
  • Pack up and return to the trailhead
  • Back in Vancouver by mid-afternoon

Plans may be adjusted based on weather, avalanche conditions, group ability, and daylight.

Accommodation

Elfin Lakes Hut

  • There are 5 spare hut spaces available
  • $17 per person for the spot in the hut

Tent Camping

  • If you would like to practice or prefer to stay in a tent, you may still use the hut (just not for sleeping)

Everyone must bring appropriate winter sleeping systems regardless of accommodation.

Transportation – Important Requirement

This trip will only run if we can secure at least 2 drivers with vehicles capable of reaching the Red Heather Parking Lot, departing from Vancouver. If you have a car and are willing to drive, please indicate this clearly when signing up. Priority may be given to drivers if the trip fills.
