BCMC MENTORSHIP PROGRAM | WINTER SEASON 2022-23

BCMC is pleased to announce the launch of its Mentorship Program for the Winter 2022-23 Season.

Starting October 12, 2022, we will accept Mentor and Mentee applications for mountain sports such as Backcountry Skiing, Ice Climbing, and Snowshoeing. Mentors and Mentees interested in other sports, like Splitboarding, Ski Mountaineering, Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, etc., are welcome to apply in the “Other” category. If we have enough Mentor/Mentee applications in any of these sports, we will include them in the Mentorship Program.

The primary objective of the Mentorship Program is to provide BCMC members access and opportunity to learn and practice skills in a safe and trusting environment. The program will also help Mentors and Mentees enhance competencies and confidence in the chosen mountain sport.

Mentorship is not a replacement for formal guiding or training; mentors are not certified mountain guides. Mentees are encouraged to augment their skills development with formal training independently or through BCMC training events.

EXPECTATIONS FROM A MENTOR:

  • Active BCMC Member with BCMC Waiver Status as Current

  • Commit to at least one mentorship trip per month or four trips during the season. Based on feedback from the previous Mentorship Program, we ask Mentors to post trips on the BCMC website with tentative dates for the entire season by December 31, 2022. Planning trips in advance will help Mentees sign up for the trips and avoid scheduling conflicts.

  • Attend Mentee-Mentor meetup for potential Mentors and Mentees on December 4 or 6 (to be finalized), 07:00 pm - 09:00 pm at The Anza Club. All potential Mentors will be notified about the Meetup by November 20, 2022.

  • Has appropriate and adequate technical skills and experience in the chosen mountain sport

  • Create a safe and trusting learning environment for the Mentee(s)

  • Respect the Mentee’s preferences shared as part of the application process

  • Is willing to share expertise and open to learning from the mentorship experience

  • Can provide honest and constructive feedback to the Mentee(s)

  • Own the required gear to lead a trip for the chosen mountain sport

  • Is responsible for getting to the meetup point for mentorship trips

  • Meet the secondary set of criteria specific to each mountain sport, e.g. AST-1 for Backcountry Skiing

EXPECTATIONS FROM A MENTEE:

  • Active BCMC Member with BCMC Waiver Status as Current

  • Commit to at least one mentorship trip per month or four trips during the season. BCMC will ask Mentors to post trips with tentative dates for the entire season by December 31, 2022. If you cannot join at least four of these trips during the season, BCMC will reconsider your participation in the program. If you sign up for trips and don’t show up or cancel on short notice without any valid justification, you will not be eligible to apply for future BCMC Mentorship programs.

  • Attend Mentee-Mentor meetup for potential Mentors and Mentees on December 4 or 6 (to be finalized), 07:00 pm - 09:00 pm at The Anza Club. All potential Mentees will be notified about the Meetup by November 20, 2022.

  • Respects the Mentor’s preferences shared as part of the application process

  • Has identified at least one developmental goal for the season

  • Is open to receiving constructive feedback and willing to learn from the mentorship experience

  • Owns or can rent required gear related to chosen mountain sport

  • Is responsible for getting to the meetup point for mentorship trips

  • Meet the secondary set of criteria specific to each mountain sport, e.g. AST-1 for Backcountry Skiing/Splitboarding

MENTOR-MENTEE PAIRING PROCESS:

Based on the feedback from previous programs, we will have a two-step pairing process this season.

Step 1: BCMC Mentorship team will review the applications and shortlist a list of potential mentors and mentees based on:

  • Goals: what do the Mentor and Mentee want to achieve from this program?

  • Skills: what is the Mentor and Mentee's skill level in the chosen mountain sport?

  • Preferences: are there any preferences provided by the Mentor or Mentee?

  • Mentor Availability: do we have Mentors available to be paired with Mentees in a given sport and skill level?

All potential Mentors and Mentees selected for the meetup will be notified by November 20, 2022.

Step 2: Mentor-Mentee Meetup on December 4 or 6 (to be finalized), 2022, at The Anza Club:

  • The goal is to provide Mentors and Mentees in a given mountain sport to meet each other and discuss goals, preferences, fitness/skill level, etc.

  • Mentors and Mentees will have an opportunity to have a 1:1 discussion.

  • We will also have a Q&A session about the program, expectations, required support, etc.

BCMC Mentorship team will work with Mentors to finalize the list of Mentees and send out the final communication on Mentor-Mentee pairs by December 10, 2022.

MENTOR INCENTIVES:

Mentors who organize at least four outdoor trips as part of the mentorship program and post them on the BCMC website will be eligible for the following incentives at the end of the program:

  • BCMC Pro Discount Program for a year
  • Up to 50% reimbursement (maximum of $200) on any guided instructional course that you take within a year of completing the mentorship program.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM Q&A:

BCMC will host an online Q&A session on October 17, 2022, 07:00 pm - 08:00 pm, to answer questions about the Mentorship Program. The Q&A session is open to any BCMC member interested in joining the Mentorship Program as a Mentee or a Mentor.

POSTING MENTORSHIP TRIPS ON BCMC WEBSITE:

All trips organized as part of the Mentorship Program should be posted on the BCMC website. Even if a trip is planned last minute, it should be posted on the BCMC website. We encourage Mentees to help Mentors post trips on BCMC and help in the trip planning process.

Mentors can limit the trip participation to just their Mentees and are not required to accept other Mentees or other BCMC members even if they sign up for the trip.

We ask all mentorship trips to be posted on the BCMC website for the following reasons:

  • Trip Organizers are covered under BCMC Liability Insurance
  • Ensures all Mentors and Mentees are members with "current" waiver status
  • It makes it easy to keep track of trips and participation by Mentors/Mentees
  • It helps new members (Mentors and Mentees) build a history of trips they have completed with BCMC. When a Mentor/Mentee signs up for future (non-mentorship) trips, it will help the trip organizer assess the member’s skill level and commitment.
  • Details included in a trip posting, like GPX files, photos, trail information, blog reports, weather forecast links, etc., helps other BCMC members in planning their trip.
  • Mentorship Trips help increase the total number of trips posted on BCMC.
